The wait is over for survival horror fans. Total Chaos has officially launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the latter including a Day One release on Game Pass. This standalone release takes the cult classic DOOM II total conversion mod and rebuilds it into a full commercial title, featuring a soundtrack from horror legend Akira Yamaoka.
From Mod to Standalone Nightmare
If you played the original mod, you know Total Chaos doesn't play nice. This isn't a run-and-gun shooter; it's a resource-starved survival experience set on the decaying Fort Oasis mining colony. The standalone version preserves the "Madness system" that defined the original, where your character's deteriorating mental state actively warps the visuals and audio, creating enemies that might not actually be there.
The developers at Trigger Happy Interactive—comprised of VFX talent from major films—have overhauled the visuals while keeping the gritty, industrial aesthetic intact. The gameplay loop remains focused on scavenging, crafting rudimentary weapons, and managing a painfully limited inventory. You aren't a super soldier here; you're just trying not to break.
Silent Hill Legend on Audio Duty
The biggest addition to this release is the audio landscape. Akira Yamaoka, best known for his work on the Silent Hill franchise, has composed original music for the game. For a title that relies heavily on psychological dread and atmospheric tension, securing a composer of Yamaoka's caliber is a massive win for the immersion factor.
When is Total Chaos coming to VR?
While the flat-screen version is out now, virtual reality enthusiasts will need to wait a bit longer. SteamVR support is currently scheduled for Q2 2026. Given how the Madness system messes with player perception, the VR implementation could be particularly intense, justifying the extra development time.
Total Chaos is available now on Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Microsoft Store.
