Gamepires is tackling two major background projects for Scum: a complete inventory system overhaul and a new build machine intended to make future patches less prone to bugs. Development Update #151 gives us a look at the progress on these foundational systems that could significantly change the player experience.
Under the Hood: Reworks and Future-Proofing
The programming team's biggest task remains the inventory rework. A clean, responsive inventory is critical in a survival game, and this overhaul aims to rebuild the system from the ground up. The sound team is already creating new audio to accompany these changes, suggesting a deep-level redesign of how players will interact with their gear, not just a visual facelift.
Alongside the rework, the team is implementing a new build machine. If you've ever been frustrated by an update introducing unexpected issues, this is for you. This system is how the developers package and deploy patches. A more robust machine means patches should be more stable and reliable, reducing the chances of a hotfix breaking more than it fixes.
What new vehicles are coming to Scum?
While we don't have a release date, the art and animation teams are expanding our transportation options. New animations for sidecars are in the works, which will likely tie into the previously mentioned sidecar weapon stations. More intriguingly, artists are rigging another entirely new, unannounced vehicle. More ways to traverse the island are always a good thing, adding new strategic layers to travel and looting.
Finally, the level design team is reportedly preparing documentation for work planned for 2026. While their current tasks are under wraps, this long-term planning is a healthy sign for the game's future, indicating that Gamepires is mapping out content well in advance. It’s a lot of foundational work, but these are the kinds of updates that improve the core health of Scum for years to come.
