As SCUM approaches its long-awaited 1.0 release, Gamepires has shifted focus from showcasing new features to addressing community concerns in Development Update #132. With most of the team now dedicated to bugfixing, this update provides crucial insights into what players can expect at launch and beyond.
What's Coming in SCUM 1.0?
While Gamepires hasn't announced a specific release date, they've confirmed that all features mentioned in their Q2 roadmap will arrive with the 1.0 update. Following the recent community address video, the development team clarified several key points about the upcoming release.
The controversial new encounter system for puppet spawning will remain, albeit with significant improvements. For server owners who prefer the old system, Gamepires will release server files allowing custom configurations that can mimic previous puppet behavior. This compromise addresses performance concerns while respecting player preferences.
Post-Launch Roadmap Takes Shape
Official mod support won't make the 1.0 cut but remains on the roadmap for a post-launch update. Similarly, the much-anticipated inventory rework has been delayed, as the developer responsible is currently focused on finalizing server files for release.
After launch, SCUM will transition to structured periodic updates with an emphasis on polish and stability. The first major post-launch update, scheduled for Q3 2023, will expand NPC functionalities beyond their current role as threats with loot.
What About Server Wipes?
A full server wipe—including characters and stats—will accompany the 1.0 release. Gamepires explained this is necessary to properly implement all changes and provide a level playing field for newcomers. While wipes may still occur post-launch, the team aims to make them as infrequent as possible.
Quality-of-Life Improvements
The update revealed numerous behind-the-scenes improvements to game systems as part of ongoing bugfixing efforts. Map and settlement enhancements will increase immersion, including the addition of trucks to certain areas. The team is also considering implementing puppet movement speed settings after the 1.0 release.
While some modular features couldn't be completed in time for launch, Gamepires reassured players that these will be prioritized in subsequent updates, possibly including seasonal content to keep the experience fresh.
As SCUM prepares to exit Early Access, this development update suggests a thoughtful approach to balancing community wishes with technical realities. The focus on polished, bug-free releases post-launch indicates Gamepires is planning for the game's long-term success under Jagex's publishing.
