Riot Games has announced a significant overhaul to Teamfight Tactics' cosmetic rarity system, streamlining the current tiers into a more intuitive format starting with Patch 14.5. The update aims to simplify how players understand and purchase TFT's expanding cosmetic offerings.

Simplified Rarity System Coming to TFT

On May 12, 2025, Katie "Riot Ukime" Guo revealed that League of Legends' auto-battler mode Teamfight Tactics will combine its Rare and Epic tiers into a single "Standard" tier. This change reduces the total number of rarity levels from five to four: Standard, Legendary, Mythic, and Prestige.

The current system has struggled to keep pace with TFT's evolution and the growing diversity of cosmetic types. Players will see this streamlined approach implemented with the release of Patch 14.5, along with several UI improvements to better showcase cosmetic rarities.

What Changes Can Players Expect?

Beyond merging rarity tiers, the update introduces several quality-of-life improvements:

  • Non-upgradable Little Legends and Booms will automatically be designated as three-star content
  • Moon icons will replace Stars for Chibi and Unbound Tacticians
  • Pricing for the new Standard tier will match current Rare tier pricing
  • Clear labeling of cosmetic rarity tier and type across all interfaces

The standardized categorization will apply to all cosmetic types including Little Legends, Chibis, Unbound Tacticians, Arenas, Booms, and Portals. For example, base Chibis like Chibi Gwen will be Legendary tier, while skin variants such as Chibi Spirit Blossom Ahri will be classified as Mythic.

Enhanced Store Experience

The update brings significant UI enhancements to the Store, Loading Screen, and Battle Pass interfaces. These improvements will clearly display each item's rarity and type, helping players make more informed purchase decisions at a glance.

This cosmetic overhaul comes amid a busy season for League of Legends' auto-battler. The Cyber City set launched on April 2, 2025, bringing a futuristic aesthetic to the game, while recent months have seen the release of premium cosmetics like Chibi Dragon Trainer Tristana (May 1) and the Dawn's Duality Mini Cinematic featuring Chibi Prestige Dawnbringer Yone (April 10).

Why This Matters for Players

The rarity tier simplification addresses longstanding confusion around TFT's cosmetic ecosystem. By establishing clearer categories and visual indicators, both new and veteran players should find it easier to understand the value proposition of different cosmetic options.

For collectors and cosmetic enthusiasts, this update provides a more transparent framework for evaluating the exclusivity and value of their in-game items, while maintaining the same price point for the new Standard tier as the previous Rare tier.
