Riot Games is taking a massive step forward in combating toxic behavior in League of Legends with a significantly improved griefing detection system coming in patch 25.09. This update promises to identify and punish disruptive players more effectively, resulting in approximately ten times more legitimate bans for game-ruining behavior.

Griefing Detection Gets Major Overhaul

According to Riot's latest development update, the enhanced griefing detection system will target behaviors that make gameplay miserable for others, even when those actions don't directly cause a match loss. In a welcome change for accountability, report feedback will now include the name of the offender, similar to how cheating notifications already work.

The new system has undergone extensive testing on live games to ensure high accuracy with minimal false positives before its upcoming rollout in patch 25.09. This represents Riot's most aggressive stance yet against players who intentionally ruin the competitive experience.

Honor System Revamp and LP Refunds

This anti-griefing initiative follows other recent behavior system improvements. In patch 25.04, Riot revamped the Honor system to dynamically update based on recent behavior rather than simply tracking games played. Honor levels no longer reset each Season, with new players starting at Honor Level 3 (considered average).

Additionally, patch 25.06 introduced LP refunds for matches affected by cheaters and botters. This system has already refunded over 700,000 LP to more than 30,000 players, while approximately 24,000 accounts were banned for cheating.

What's Next for Player Behavior Systems?

Riot is currently testing True Skill 2, a new evaluation system designed to address smurfing and boosting by more quickly placing players at their correct skill level. The system is being tested in non-Ranked queues before a potential wider implementation.

For positive reinforcement, Riot plans to introduce additional Honor rewards beyond the current two Hextech Chests per Act. Players who reach Honor Levels 4 and 5 can expect new rewards and privileges in the future.

These comprehensive behavior system improvements demonstrate Riot's commitment to creating a more positive environment in League of Legends by both rewarding good behavior and more effectively punishing disruptive players. The developer promises to continue this work and keep the community updated through Dev Updates and blogs.
