TFT Double Up Evolves: Teamwork Cannon Replaces Rune in Cyber City

Teamfight Tactics' popular 2v2 mode is getting a major upgrade with the release of Cyber City on April 2nd. Double Up will graduate from Workshop status with the introduction of the Teamwork Cannon, replacing the Rune of Allegiance and enabling more strategic unit and item trading between teammates.

Teamwork Cannon Revolutionizes TFT Double Up Gameplay

The most significant change coming to League of Legends TFT's Double Up mode is the replacement of the Rune of Allegiance with the new Teamwork Cannon. This dedicated bench slot tool will allow players to send any unit to their ally at any time (with a four-round cooldown) and trade basic items and components without any cooldown restrictions.

Unlike the previous Rune of Allegiance, the Teamwork Cannon offers greater flexibility by enabling the trading of units of any cost throughout the game. While it does take up a permanent bench slot, the faster recharge time means more frequent unit trading opportunities, potentially leading to more three-star units and stronger team compositions.

Item Trading and Free Gift Armory

Another major upgrade is the introduction of item trading functionality. The Teamwork Cannon will allow players to exchange item components and completed core items with their partners. All trades must be one-for-one and of equal value, but this addition opens up entirely new strategic possibilities for team coordination.

The Gift Armory is also receiving a welcome change. Previously, gifting items from these Armories cost the gifting player gold, with costs increasing based on the power of the loot. Starting with Cyber City, all gifts will be free, eliminating the economic tension that sometimes discouraged optimal team play.

What's Changing in Double Up Health Mechanics?

One notable gameplay adjustment is the removal of the 1 HP shield that previously protected players from elimination. Health pools will now function exactly as they do in standard TFT mode, but remain shared between teammates. The core Double Up mechanics of shared health and reinforcements will continue unchanged, with players still able to reinforce their partner if they win their fight first.

Custom Lobbies and No Ranked Restrictions

Perhaps the most requested feature finally arriving with Cyber City is custom lobbies for Double Up. Players will be able to create private games with up to eight friends, enabling full 2v2v2v2 matches with chosen participants. This opens up possibilities for friendly competitions, practice sessions, and community tournaments.

In a move emphasizing the social nature of Double Up, Riot is removing all ranked restrictions from the mode. Players of any rank will be able to team up, though some competitive integrity rules will apply at higher levels:

  • Full lobbies of eight players will not receive LP or MMR changes
  • Masters+ players won't receive LP/MMR updates when playing with Gold or lower teammates

This approach aims to balance competitive integrity with accessibility, allowing friends to play together regardless of skill disparity while protecting the integrity of high-level ranked play.

Visual and UI Improvements

Beyond gameplay changes, Double Up is receiving several visual upgrades to enhance the team experience:

  • Upgraded loading screen that better showcases team pairings
  • New team UI health bars for clearer in-game status tracking
  • Team shuffling functionality to reassemble squads within the lobby

These quality-of-life improvements should make the Double Up experience more intuitive and visually distinct from standard TFT matches.

When Can Players Experience the New Double Up?

All these upgrades will go live with the release of Cyber City on April 2nd, 2025, as part of patch 14.1. Riot has indicated they'll be monitoring player feedback during PBE testing to make any necessary adjustments to the Teamwork Cannon's cooldown and other new features before the official release.

The graduation of Double Up from Workshop status marks an important milestone for what has become one of TFT's most popular play modes since its introduction. With these substantial upgrades, League of Legends TFT's 2v2 mode is positioned to provide an even more strategic and social experience for duos looking to climb the ranks together or just enjoy some tactical teamwork.
