Previously, creators earned money through engagement payouts based on playtime. Now, they have a direct sales model. These tools are currently in a preview phase, letting developers test and build transaction-based experiences before a full rollout.
A New Marketplace with Rules
This isn't a free-for-all where creators can just start selling their own versions of popular skins. Epic has laid out specific rules to protect the core cosmetic economy. Creators can monetize their islands by selling items they create themselves, but with some important guardrails.
What can creators sell in their Fortnite islands?
The system is designed for items that enhance the experience within a specific island. According to Epic's new documentation, developers can sell things like:
- Consumables: Items with limited uses, like extra ammo for a custom weapon or a special potion in an RPG map.
- Durable Items: Permanent unlocks within an island, such as access to a special VIP area or a unique sword that doesn't break.
- Gameplay Items: Anything that directly affects the gameplay of that island, offering new ways to play the creator's specific game mode.
Crucially, creators are explicitly forbidden from selling items that replicate core Fortnite cosmetics, such as Outfits, Gliders, Pickaxes, or Emotes. This ensures the main Item Shop remains the exclusive source for player-wide cosmetic customization.
How much will creators earn from these sales?
The revenue split is the most significant part of this announcement. The standard share for creators will be 50% of the V-Bucks value from each transaction. However, to kickstart the system, Epic is offering an incredibly generous incentive: creators will receive 100% of the revenue from their in-island sales through the end of 2026. This is a massive opportunity for early adopters to build and profit from their UEFN creations.
