The next playtest for Morbid Metal is shaping up to be a major evolution for the shapeshifting roguelite, introducing not just a new character but entirely new progression loops. Developer Screen Juice is adding Vekta, a ranged fighter, and a dual-layered upgrade system that will change how players approach both individual runs and long-term goals.
A New Way to Fight with Vekta
Until now, combat in Morbid Metal has been an up-close and personal affair. The introduction of Vekta, a shuriken-wielding combatant, breaks that mold. This adds a completely new strategic layer, allowing players to weave ranged attacks into their shapeshifting combos. It opens up possibilities for kiting tough enemies and managing crowds from a distance, a stark contrast to the purely melee-focused gameplay we've seen so far.
Deeper Runs, Permanent Power
The playtest is also overhauling progression. During a run, players will now earn Tokens to spend at the Emporium for temporary boosts like more HP or new Routines. This adds a classic roguelite element of adapting your build on the fly. For long-term growth, the Neural Nexus, Protocols, and Corpora systems will allow for permanent upgrades between runs. This means failures aren't just resets; they're opportunities to invest in your core strength, making each new attempt feel more powerful.
These new systems will be put to the test in expanded and new arenas, including the Sublime Garden and the brand-new Steel Sanctuary, which will feature their own boss encounters.
How can I join the Morbid Metal playtest?
Access to this upcoming playtest is being managed through the official game Discord server. Selected members will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before they can participate, so keep an eye on the community channels for your chance to get in. These changes suggest the game is moving beyond its core combat to build a more robust and replayable roguelite experience.
